Wegweiser interkommunALE

A Guide to International Cooperation at the Local Level

International cooperation doesn’t start far away – it begins in our communities. Many German adult education centres (Volkshochschulen) are already active in town partnerships and international projects. To support this work, the Urban X-Change Network has published the handbook Wegweiser interkommunALE.

Who is it for?

The guide is aimed at Volkshochschulen and other adult education providers planning or considering cooperation with international partners. It offers practical tips, templates, and ideas that can be adapted to different contexts.

What’s it about?

The Wegweiser interkommunALE is a hands-on guide for adult education centres that want to build or strengthen international partnerships. It shows how to start and manage projects, from first contact to evaluation, and shares real experiences from five Volkshochschulen – including successes, challenges, and practical lessons learned.

Created as part of the Urban X-Change Network II and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, the publication encourages local institutions to see international education as part of their civic responsibility – contributing to understanding, democracy, and sustainable development.
