Urban X-Change Network II – Strengthening International Bonds between Husum and Trzcianka
In early June 2025, Husum, Germany, welcomed a delegation from its twin town Trzcianka, Poland, for the four-day closing event of the Urban X-Change Network II project. The gathering celebrated international friendship, civic cooperation, and cultural exchange, with the goal of strengthening ties on both personal and institutional levels. A delegation from Husum’s long-standing partner town Kidderminster, UK, also took part in several activities alongside the Polish guests.
More than sixty participants engaged in a varied program that included official ceremonies, educational tours, cultural workshops, and informal social events. The Adult Education Centre (VHS Husum) served as a central meeting point, where delegates and local residents prepared traditional North German dishes and discussed shared values and cultural differences.
Participants explored Husum’s cultural heritage through visits to museums, the city library, and local traditions such as the Ring Riding Parade, gaining insights into the town’s identity and civic life. These experiences sparked ideas for future cooperation in the areas of culture, education, and community engagement.
A particular highlight was the official reception at Husum Town Hall, which commemorated 70 years of partnership with Kidderminster and reaffirmed the town’s commitment to its renewed ties with Trzcianka. Local officials reflected on the history and significance of these relationships and emphasized their dedication to continued collaboration.
Informal events, including a barbecue hosted by the fire brigade and an excursion to the Wadden Sea tidal flats, provided opportunities for spontaneous dialogue and fostered genuine friendships, contributing to a strong sense of community and shared purpose.
By the end of the visit, numerous new personal and professional connections had been established. There was clear interest in expanding youth and civic exchange initiatives in the future. The event was widely praised for its welcoming atmosphere and educational value, and it helped raise public awareness of the importance of town twinning.
Ultimately, Urban X-Change Network II demonstrated that international partnerships flourish not only through formal agreements, but through shared experiences and mutual understanding. Delegates returned home with lasting memories and a renewed commitment to sustaining and developing these valuable cross-border relationships.
